Four fixes proposed for stricter restricted token rules on XRP Ledger.

Aims to prevent unauthorized receipt of restricted tokens.

Part of the fixCleanup3_5_0 network upgrade.

Routine protocol hardening, not a response to a security incident.

Story

XRP Ledger developers have proposed four fixes to close avenues through which accounts could receive restricted tokens without issuer approval. These changes are included in the network upgrade fixCleanup3_5_0, though its activation on the mainnet is still pending. For certain restricted tokens, issuer approval is required before an account can hold them. Developers identified several ways to circumvent this requirement. One fix, for example, would require approval for both tokens in an automated market-maker pool before an account can invest in the pool. Another fix addresses approval checks that were previously only performed when trustlines had a zero balance, which allowed trustlines with existing token balances to receive additional tokens without an approval check. The XRP Ledger Foundation described these changes as routine protocol hardening and not a response to a specific security incident. No affected users have been reported to date. These measures demonstrate the continuous commitment to improving the security and integrity of the XRP Ledger.

Issue context

The crypto market has been shaken by a severe security incident at Binance, resulting in over $6 billion in various cryptocurrencies being affected. This incident triggered a wave of liquidations totaling $1.53 billion, with long positions being particularly hit. Meanwhile, other exchanges like OKX are working to reassure users through security confirmations. These events underscore the persistent risks of centralized platforms and the need for robust security measures across the industry.

Recent events at Binance demonstrate how quickly security incidents can impact the entire market. High leverage amplifies such movements. Be mindful of your asset security and aware of the risks associated with centralized exchanges and leveraged positions. Volatility remains a constant factor.
