Story
Kalshi's 15-minute gold markets demonstrated remarkable performance in September, generating an estimated $5 million in fees. This is nearly double the $2.6 million generated by corresponding Ether markets in the same month. In September, 542 million gold contracts were traded, surpassing the 318 million Ether contracts, just weeks after the gold markets launched in August. Bitcoin markets remained dominant, with estimated fees of $60.4 million in September, according to Predict Charts. Kalshi introduced the 15-minute gold markets in August, allowing traders to take positions on whether the price of gold will rise or fall within 15-minute intervals. Kalshi's broader commodities business is also growing. The company reported in September that commodities trading volume reached $400 million within seven months, more than four times the volume achieved by its crypto markets during the same period. An analysis by InGame revealed that 15-minute markets for cryptocurrencies, commodities, and financial products accounted for 80% of Kalshi's non-sports related fees in the seven days leading up to October 5.
Issue context
The crypto market experienced a notable correction, with Bitcoin falling below the $84,000 mark. This occurred after an unsuccessful attempt to break resistance between $87,000 and $87,800, and was accompanied by the opening of large leveraged short positions on Hyperliquid. Concurrently, Ethereum saw persistent outflows from ETFs, indicating waning institutional demand. These developments underscore the market's sensitivity to derivatives activity and institutional capital movements.
Recent market movements illustrate how quickly sentiment can shift, especially when derivatives and institutional flows come into play. Pay attention to liquidity and the market's reaction to key support and resistance levels. Your risk tolerance should always be paramount, particularly during volatile periods.
